Who will make decisions for you at the end?
A majority of African Americans do not have end-of-life or estate planning documentation in place due to taboos about discussing death and myths about the need for such planning. It has been observed that there can be disparities in end-of-life planning among different demographic groups, including African Americans. Various factors, such as cultural beliefs, historical mistrust, access to healthcare, and socioeconomic status, can contribute to these differences. Addressing these disparities involves improving education, and access to resources, and fostering open conversations about end-of-life wishes within the African-American community.
In cities like Memphis, where unexpected and untimely deaths are higher than average, the need to educate African Americans about the need for and the ease of estate planning is more critical than ever.
"The ReWill"
ReWill offers hybrid courses for African Americans living in poverty to de-mystify end-of-life and estate planning and help participants create these critical documents, helping families to avoid more post-death trauma and hardship.
Our Story
Schanaque Watson
Founder/ CEO of Watson Writes,LLC
Death is never easy to discuss.
From 2013 - 2020, I buried multiple loved ones: my grandmother, grandfather, and uncle. In 2013, at age 22, my life changed when I found my grandmother on the kitchen floor. I called for help and performed CPR. It was the first time I felt like I would never be normal again.
Before my grandmother passed, she had told me that all her documents were in the file cabinet, bottom drawer, on the right side. I went there to prepare for her funeral, but she had missed some steps in estate planning.
In January 2015, I received news of my uncle's passing in New York City. I had to arrange a funeral in another state and prove that my uncle had no wife or children. Luckily, I was listed as the beneficiary on his accounts, but I didn't know his wishes.
Not having end-of-life wishes in order can create challenges with family and friends. In March 2020, during the pandemic, I found my grandfather unconscious. The hospital initially refused to let me in the hospital, but I had the proper paperwork to make decisions on his behalf.
This paperwork saved my life and allowed me to be with my Grandfather until the end.
